Production [edit]

In 2014, the series was first announced by Netflix and Scholastic Media, and was titled The Magic School Bus 360°.[x] The new iteration of the franchise features a modernized "Ms. Frizzle" (replacing Valerie with her younger sister Fiona) and a high-tech bus that stresses modern inventions such equally robotics, wearables and photographic camera technology. The promise is to captivate children's imaginations and motivate their interest in the sciences.[11] Information technology was produced past ix Story Media Group.[12] Producer Stuart Stone, who voiced Ralphie in the original series, stated that The Magic School Bus 360° will feature some of the original phonation actors in different roles. The show's voice cast is based in Los Angeles, California, United States and Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Susan Blu every bit the Los Angeles voice managing director and Alyson Courtroom as the Toronto voice managing director.[thirteen] In February 2017, Kate McKinnon was cast in the role of Ms. Frizzle (without clarifying information technology was Fiona, the younger sister of Valerie, at present Professor Frizzle, still voiced by Tomlin). The series then changed its proper noun to The Magic School Autobus Rides Once more.[14] The series was released on Netflix on September 29, 2017.[1] The second flavor was released on Apr 13, 2018.[ii]

Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton sings the theme song.[15] Phoebe Terese, a character from the original series, is replaced by a new student named Jyoti, as information technology was revealed that Phoebe transferred dorsum to her old school.[xvi] [17] The episode endings feature question and answer sessions with Professor Frizzle, echoing the segments about viewers calling the producer which accompanied the original series on commercial-gratuitous channels.[xviii] Despite clarifying some creative license taken in the episode, these scenes are still fix in a universe with magical vehicles.[19] Among other changes, the students still wearable the aforementioned clothes every day but they do not resemble those from the original series.[20] Three 45–minute specials were released in 2020: the offset special The Magic School Bus Rides Again: Kids in Space was released on August 7,[21] the 2d named The Magic School Omnibus Rides Again: The Frizz Connection on October 20[22] and a third titled The Magic School Bus Rides Again: In the Zone on December 26.[23] The artstyle was changed for the specials every bit the characters take no outlines and the lighting and shading are more than detailed.

Disquisitional reception [edit]

Why has this good-natured show already received an inordinate corporeality of judgement? How can this much vitriol exist thrown at a cosmos before anyone has even seen it?

Decider, [24]

Subsequently the series' declaration and the release of its trailer, there was initial resistance to the new art style, absence of Lily Tomlin every bit Ms. Frizzle, and fear information technology would non live up to the original series.[25] [26] AOL accused the show of giving Ms. Frizzle a nose job.[27] Bustle put this downwards to fans of the show beingness "protective of its legacy".[28]

Despite this speculation, the series has been critically acclaimed upon release. Mutual Sense Media deemed the bear witness a worthy successor to its 1990s sister series, praising its gender and ethnic diversity and its delivery to didactics children about Stalk subjects.[29] Christianity Today argues that the show managed to keep the "genius of the franchise", which is that the children are almost more intrigued by the complication and order of the natural world rather than the magic of the titular schoolhouse bus.[30] Daily Dot praised the series' premiere for addressing the change to the show's structure, putting viewers at ease through the transition, adding that the science was made "approachable".[26] The Houstonian found the episodes' scenarios to be "pretty interesting", commenting on the academical and moral lessons.[31] The AV Social club felt the series lives up to its predecessor, and contains the same "goofy humour and ease with making learning fun".[32] Some other AV Club article wrote that the series is "lively, fast-paced, and exceedingly tolerable for adults", and total of enough science to permit them to park their kids in front of it guilt-free.[33]
